FAQs

I am a candidate

Have a look at what’s available on our ’Find a Job’ page. If you don’t see a role that fits your talents, you can register a general profile and let us know which areas of Howdens you’re interested in.

If you do not have a CV it is best to write one or have one done for you but you can certainly apply without one by completing the application form and questionnaire.

Keep it simple, concise, easy to read and focused on selling your skills. The challenge is to do all that while making it more appealing and attractive than the rest. Avoid wacky layouts or fancy gimmicks – the most important thing is that it looks professional and clear. And, above all, it should be completely accurate with no grammatical errors, spelling mistakes or typos.

Presentation and order is important so that we can absorb key points quickly. This brings us on to length. Even for the most senior individual, a CV should be no longer than two pages. In fact, the fewer the better. So you should think carefully about the words and phrases you use.

You should also consider the typeface, colour, headings, capital letters and positioning. We’re not going to be prescriptive about this as; ultimately, it’s down to your personal taste. Just make sure it looks clear and professional, and that it won’t distort when viewed on a variety of software platforms.

We also recommend that you fully research and understand the role before applying. And obviously, you should only apply for positions that you meet the minimum requirements for. In short, you need to make sure you’re fully committed and qualified before submitting an application.

Yes, once you're signed-up to the careers site you can apply for a number of roles and the applications will be considered separately. However, please apply for the roles that are most suitable to your experience and skills.

Thanks for your application! We're now taking a look at all the applications and we'll let you know if you've been successful to get through to interview or not. We'll try to get back to you within two weeks, but as some roles attract a large amount of applicants, it can sometimes take a little longer. So please bear with us.

We will let you know when we receive your application. And if you make it through to the interview stage, we’ll contact you personally.

If you’re not quite right for a position, we’ll send you an email to let you know you’ve not got through to the interview this time. Furthermore, we’ll keep your profile on file for any future opportunities you would be suitable for that may arise.

Yes. By completing a Job Application on our system, your background will be considered (and potentially selected) by recruiters at Howdens.

To increase your chances of being considered for future open jobs, we recommend that you return to this site and apply for new positions you find. You should also be sure to select the automatic e-mail notification option within your Career Profile.

The interview process is one of our best opportunities to get to know the potential of a candidate, and for the candidate to get to know our people and our businesses. In most cases, candidates will meet with the hiring manager or sometimes with other team members.

The overall process can vary according to the role and the department but in general you’ll be asked questions about your academic and work experiences, and you’ll have a chance to ask some questions of us. It will be most helpful for you to know about us

You should also have a good sense of what value you think you may bring to our business and be prepared to offer examples of your past achievements or successes

Wear your most professional outfit that you feel most comfortable in and you feel gives us the best impression of you.

Remember, you’ll normally only have an hour to tell us how great you are – so remember to listen to the questions carefully and make sure your answer is relevant & concise.

Interviews are a two way process, so we like it if you have some questions up your sleeve to ask us too.

Remember to do your research!

We’re easy to find but make sure you remember your map just in case.

Wear your most professional outfit that you feel most comfortable in and you feel gives us the best impression of you.

You cannot check your individual applicant status on a job; however, you can check the general status of a job posting to see if it is still open.

From the Job Application, click on your username and then click on ‘Completed Applications’ at the top right-hand side of the page.

The current status for all jobs to which you’ve applied will be shown on the page

It depends where you were in the process. We’re able to give feedback after interviews, but not after the CV screening stage – the high number of applications we receive means that, unfortunately, we just can’t get back to everyone.

I am an agency

On the rare occasions that both our team and the PSL are unable to find suitable candidates, we will make a call based on our own experience and the recommendations of peers in other companies.

No, our HR Team operates a direct sourcing model. We hire for the majority of our roles without using agencies and on the odd occasion where we need or want some help, we have a small PSL that do a great job of supporting us.
